Hi! My name’s Grace and I’m interning at Art House this summer through Studio Institute. My pronouns are they/them/theirs, I’m a rising junior at Kent State University, I’m a ceramics major, and I live in Brooklyn Center not too far away from Art House. My true love is ceramics and I like to make functional objects, sculptural or just practical. I’m also interested in sculpture, though, and in the sculptures I’m making now I like to include text and fabric. I’m especially interested in incorporating embroidery as a sculptural element. I also like art history and the theory
behind different art movements.
I had the chance to look at some of Art House’s collection the other day. There isn’t a gallery or exhibition set up in the space currently, so I was able to see pieces they had in storage. I saw some pieces from previous Urban Bright exhibitions, but I spent most of my time looking at pieces from previous Artist Inventory Challenges. I was especially entertained by Christina Turner’s work because of how fun and whimsical it was and I like the aesthetic quality of collages and mixed-media pieces. I thought it was interesting to see how the different artists made unique and cohesive works out of materials they didn’t necessarily pick themselves. I feel like I got a better sense of the artists Art House works with, the type of work they create, and the things Art House’s programs teach.
