The National Endowment for the Arts Big Read is designed to broaden our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book. Art House, Inc. is one of 70+ nonprofit organizations to receive a grant to host an NEA Big Read project. Our Art House community is reading The House on Mango Street by award-winning author Sandra Cisneros.

"The House on Mango Street is the remarkable story of Esperanza. Told in a series of vignettes – sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes deeply joyous–it is the story of a young Latina girl growing up in Chicago, inventing for herself who and what she will become. Few other books in our time have touched so many readers" (via Goodreads.com).

Join us in discussing this coming-of-age novel through June 30, 2022 by participating in free community events such as book discussions, book-based art projects, and more.

Pick up a copy of The House on Mango Street  to read at Art House during special programming or regular hours. Books also available at Julia De Burgos, South Brooklyn Branch Library, SPACES, and Shalom Tranquility Garden beginning in March.

NEA Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest.

El proyecto NEA Big Read es una iniciativa del National Endowment for the Arts (el Fondo Nacional para las Artes de Estados Unidos) en cooperación con Arts Midwest.
